Jim McDaniel - "How I got into the laser biz."
Jim McDaniel -
My first exposure to the laser was in a third grade educational film about space, and the laser shown was a ruby. The whole laser concept blew my mind, rubies and red beams of light were cool. Then came the movie "Star Wars", the Light saber, the Death star, the laser blasters, holographic projections, very cool stuff for this kid. My passion for lasers became stronger the more I saw them.

My first encounter with a laser projection system occurred when I was 17 years old.  A traveling laser show  was appearing at the National Orange Show annual fair in San Bernardino, California.  This was in 1985, and
I worked as a cook in a concession stand for "Dee's Food Concessions"  serving food  for special events at the National Orange Show Grounds. I developed the skill required for hamburgers, corndogs, hotdogs, popcorn, and sandwiches.

It  all began as an inspiration with some leftover hot dogs. After the night shift one night, I collected my food stand's leftovers, and  approached the laser show tent and asked the laser dudes: "Do you guy's want some hot dogs?"  They looked at me with surprise and said "Dude you rule" , and I was in. I got to play with their laser system, and do my own shows. After my experimenting over and over, they pulled all the covers off the laser projection system so I could see the actual optical effects in action. I saw lots of multi-color lasers shooting through beam splitters and bouncing off mirrors. It was totally cool!
I learned alot about Lasers that night, and my inspiration had only just begun to evolve. There was something about laser light that up-lifted me, somehow energized me. I then decided I wanted to do my own laser shows someday. I knew I needed to do a lot more than burgers. This began a dream that grew up and took flight. I wanted my own laser, to do my own laser shows and build my own laser effects. So I had to save all the money I could, and save I did.

I bought my first laser at  age 17  in 1985. When the shipment came I couldn't wait to open the box and turn it on. After looking at it in every detail I plugged it in. wow. It really worked, and a real beam of ruby red laser light was emitted. The thing cost several hundred dollars then, and my friends thought I was crazy. They all seemed to say, "How much money for a little red dot? You're crazy dude!"  But I loved it, how cool, how amazing!

Some time went by, and by playing around I got rather cool effects with the laser using household optical elements. I used crystals, mirrors, glasses, pop tart wrappers, speakers, and a dancing flower that I took apart.
I would invite my friends over to my house for laser shows. We would hang out for hours messing around with the laser.

Then it fell off a shelf, dropped about 6 feet to the floor, and it just stopped working. It was broken dude. No more laser. But as luck would have it, Jim, the Owner of the local electronics store, "Mac's Electronics"  said, "Ya should call MWK!"
I said MWK who? He said they're in Corona and they sell laser stuff. I called as soon as I got home. They said "bring it on down and we'll look at it."

I rushed down as soon as I could because I couldn’t wait to see what they might have there. The drive took about 30 minuets with good traffic and I found them with no problem. As I walked into MWK industries I found my self in another world, the world of lasers. The first room I entered was the front office. I met Martin Hasa first as he was the office manager and handled the calls and technical support as well as processing sales and doing the photography for the catalog. I discussed my broken tube with Martin and he assured me that they had a replacement. I was amazed I had found such a place and couldn’t wait to see more.  Martin introduced me to Mike Kenny, the owner of MWK Industries, whose office was next to Martin's office.  Mike welcomed me, and we entered the shop to find my replacement tube.  It was a mess there, a big mess. The place was 1200 sq. ft. and the back shop had large shelves filled with boxed of lasers and interesting electronics. There were things from NASA to Lawrence Livermore Labs, military surplus, and industrial lasers. We were stepping over lasers and things I could not even recognize. The place was over flowing with technology of all sorts relating to lasers. He had boxes of replacement laser HeNe tubes, so we picked one that matched mine and tested it. I also met two additional people working in the back shop, Mitch Hartman and Wayne Hover, who helped me with the testing, to find the best laser tube with the highest power. I thought that the place was a mess but by far the coolest place to work I had ever seen.

I had to have more exposure to this environment. I knew I would be coming back soon. I discussed with Mitch and Wayne that I was attending school for electronics and would like to learn this stuff. That I had always had a passion for lasers although I didn’t understand enough about them. They asked me how I had come to get this laser that I had broken. I told them the story of the burger stand work and they laughed. Mitch said “dude hit up Mike for a job, we could use an extra hand once and a while. No Big WOOF!”  So , we approached Mike with the Idea. I said “Hi Mike, I would like to work here. I will volunteer my time to get to know this stuff. Besides you need help just cleaning this place up. It’s a wreck.” He laughed and said that I should come in Saturday at 10:00 am.

That is how it started. I worked there, for free, and  little by little everything was clean and organized as could be at the end of 6 months. One afternoon I got a call from Mike Kenny. He asked if I could come to work the next week, and he added that he would even pay me for my work from then on. He mentioned that I had done such a good job working and cleaning that I was almost the only one there who could find things. I laughed and accepted immediately. I

worked with Mike, Martin, Wayne and Mitch for several years. In a short time, Mikes business began to grow and grow, and we had many great moments in that shop. We were quite the team. We worked our butts off and we had a lot of fun playing practical jokes on each other. I learned so much then that I still use today. I graduated from ITT, but I learned from MWK: Mike, Martin, Wayne, and Mitch, Thanks again, you guys.

MWK grew even more and the shop moved in to 5500 sq.ft. we added several new staff members. It had been a great experience, but my own Laser show days were soon to be on their way.
